'' WHY ARE CHILDREN BECOMING OBESE?''
The article “why are children becoming obese?’’ by David Kraft explains and shows some of the reasons why children are becoming obese. The author shows that children who eat junk food, do not exercise, do not sleep well and children who follow their parent’s footsteps are becoming obese. What surprised me is when the author point out that biology can play a big role in children having overweight problems; however the shocking reality is that the most of these kids develop weight problems due to the poor role modeling their parents do.
I personally think that parents should be role model. Many children, the first thing they say when they have the ability to think and the ability to see what is happening in their own environment is,” I want to be like mother or father’’. I totally agree with Kraft because it’s not new that children follow their parents footsteps, also parents are the first role model that children have in their home. This can have a big impact in society. For example, if a child sees is dad all the time eating junk food, likely the child will do the same, and the dad will not be able to reclaim anything, because that is what he is teaching, unfortunately the child is becoming obese.
Unfortunately this is the reality. My cousin who lives in Spain had that situation. Every time he and my aunt visited us in the Dominican Republic, she allowed him to eat whatever he wanted, even she also ate uncontrollably. That way of eating took my cousin to suffer from obesity. When my aunt realized it was too late, my cousin weighed 120pounts with only nine years. Being Overweight can also affect the social life of the child. Studies have shown that a children suffering from obesity mostly suffer from harassment in the school.
A few months ago I read an article that said the role of parents in educating their children food habits is everything. Basically its influence reflects their own eating behavior. This is the same situation my cousin faced. With the big different that my aunt never took over the way in which my cousin ate. Parents who do not teach their children to ate healthy or exercise. Unfortunately are driving their kids to suffer from psychological problems and especially overweight problems.
